With the news of COVID-19, and the urgency of people to wash their hands and using hand sanitizer at an all-time high, there is also something that isn’t talked about – how dry your hands can be after all of the handwashing.
I’m using to washing my hands a lot. Since Bear was born, that’s really what we did several times a day. Change his diaper? Wash hands. Feed him? Wash hands. Play outside? Wash hands. As a parent, you get used to washing your hands a lot. Even as a pet parent, we wash our hands a lot.
But as much as we wash our hands, our hands can quickly dry out. With our local weather being wacky, having dry, cracked hands are just a recipe for disaster.
Here are my recommendations in different categories about what you can do to help relieve your hands after the constant hand-washing.
Over the past several months, I’ve been using various forms of shea butter from the pure and unrefined to lotion to body cream. Here are my recommendations for some of the best brands:
Nubian Heritage Raw Shea Butter
Despite the title, it’s not just shea butter. It also contains Aloe Vera (the majority of the ingredients comes from it), coconut oil, cocoa butter, castor oil, palm oil, sunflower oil, and mango butter.
However, it smells wonderful and keeps my hands (and body) very moisturized. Plus, the price is nice! Only $10.99 at Amazon (click the picture above).
Shea Moisture 100% Raw Shea Butter
This is exactly what it is – just shea butter. No added ingredients, no other oils, what you see is what you get. I usually melt the raw shea butter (it comes hard) and a little does go a long way. It also lasts forever. I’ve had my tub for over a year now and I’m just barely getting done with it.
The price is also nice on this one: retails for $10.99 at Amazon. Click on the picture above to purchase.
Now let’s say you’re not a fan of shea butter, or you’re allergic to it. What are the other non-drying options?
Vaseline with Cocoa Butter
Now, I love this and cannot recommend it enough. However, you’re probably not going to be carrying a tub of Vaseline everywhere. One other option is carrying the lip care version, which is mini and can easily fit into your pocket.
The price is the cheapest of the options so far presented: a tub will run you about $5; the lip care version will set you back $2.

Now maybe you don’t want the rich feel of Vaseline (it ain’t for everybody), but you still want your hands to feel moisturized. Here are some lotions that can also help with that:
Gold Bond Ultimate Overnight Deep Moisturizing Lotion
I love this lotion because my skin feels super moisturized. Despite a key ingredient – melatonin – I never fell asleep during the day as I wore this. I was super relaxed, however, and when you’re relaxed, you don’t really stress as much.
A little goes a long way and the price is also nice: $7.97 at Amazon. Click on the picture to purchase.
Aquaphor Healing Ointment
Staying with my current theme a little goes a long way, this ointment not only heals your hands, but it also works on cracked heels and elbows. I mean, three for one, y’all? You can’t really go wrong with this. And the price is excellent: $8.65 for a tube at Amazon. To purchase, click the picture above.
I hope everyone is staying safe and protected. If you’re feeling ill, keep your ass at home. You don’t need to infect other people when you can be healing yourself.
